If you want to live a life that is unfulfilled and ridden with the fray of disappointment, then spend it trying to prove some kind of point. Problem is, no-matter how passionate you are about your ‘point’, somebody somewhere will always be disappointed in you. You’ll eventually find yourself on the receiving end of frustration’s irk. The ‘point’ then becomes obsessive, egocentric and plain downright silly. This is a story which many people have lived.
Here’s some advice. Don’t do what you do because you have something to prove. Do it because you LOVE it. Life is far too short to waste time proving yourself. You will find you’re far more productive when you chill out and start enjoying yourself instead. This isn’t about running aimlessly…but pacing yourself to the rhythm of God’s grace. It’s refreshingly unforced.
A few years ago, I had lunch with Sir William Wright (founder of Wrightbus). I asked him what the secret of his success was. He replied in his typical understated way, ‘I love buses!!‘. Behind the jokey retort was a brilliantly serious reality. This man absolutely loves what he does. Even in his 90’s, he still goes into his office every day to work on new bus designs. The company is one of the most successful in N Ireland.
As a church leader, I determined some time ago that I won’t engage in silly politics. For a start, I’m no good at it. I also can’t bear the sheer tedium of it all. Is my thinking flawed? Probably. But I guess it’s better to be honestly flawed than dishonestly pretentious. Surely it’s better to just quietly get on with it, no fuss? It seems to me that it is, at least, an honourable way to live. I’m simplifying my life so that things I’m no good at don’t veer me away from the simplicity of doing what I love.
How about you? Maybe it’s time to put your ‘point’ away? Live positively. Instead of maligning what you don’t love, model what you do. Give it some time. Eventually, they’ll come knocking on your door asking ‘how do you do that?‘. And when that happens, you’ll find yourself distinctly unimpressed with the question. It’s got nothing to do with techniques or methods – and everything to do with love.
You only have one life. Don’t waste it. It’s God’s gift to you. Live it. Love it. Enjoy it.
The Junction Church Nottingham is coming soon!!! We can’t wait to get going this autumn.
But does Nottingham really need another church? Well….yes it absolutely does. Curiously enough, you’d be hard pressed to hear anyone ever asking if the city needs more restaurants, more hotels, more jobs, more theatres, more cafe’s. A growing city needs lots of things. And it needs more great churches too which add life and vitality to the city!! We celebrate everything that’s currently happening in town. Our mission is to reach out to those who’d never think about setting foot inside a church.
I just wanted to give you an update on what we’re planning.
We’re launching life groups in Nottingham city centre every Thursday from 6th September. These are hangouts where people can meet up, make friends, grow in their faith and do life together. For us, life groups are the BEST way to build community. Everybody needs some great people in your life who can encourage you, pray for you and cheer you on. That’s what these are all about.
We’re also going to be hosting a series of vision nights in the city. The first of these will be on Thursday 15th November (venue tbc). This is a great opportunity to worship together and catch our heart for the city of Nottingham. We’d LOVE you to save this date: THURSDAY 15TH NOVEMBER. You won’t want to miss it!!
We’re not rushing into Sunday services. Our heart is to really connect people into the Junction Church community. Before the WHAT, we need to grasp the WHY. Our heart is not to put on a load of services. No. We’re creating a community from which Jesus can build his church. Sunday services in Nottingham will happen in 2019. But lets take our time with this and enjoy the journey.
SPREAD THE WORD
If you know anyone in Nottingham (or who is coming to the city), I’d love you to let them know what we’re doing. This is a great opportunity to be part of something from the very beginning. One day, there will be a thriving, flourishing Junction Church community in Nottingham city centre. This is inevitable. But how amazing to be involved in the story now…up close and personal. If you know anyone who is interested, the best person to contact is Amy (our campus coordinator) at: firstname.lastname@example.org
On Vision Day 2015, I articulated our prayerful conviction that God has called the Junction Church to be pioneers, not settlers. I mentioned that over the next 10 years, we would become ONE church meeting in different locations – all carrying the same heart, culture and DNA.
To date, our campuses in Loughborough and Leicester are absolutely thriving. If you’ve been recently, you’ll know exactly what I mean! There’s a real sense of momentum. People’s lives are being profoundly impacted by the message of God’s grace. Many more are growing in their faith and getting planted in the house. These are exciting days. But the thing is, we could easily now become settlers. It would certainly be very convenient. But that’s not who God has called us to be. We are pioneers.
So, I’m excited to let you know that our third Junction Church campus location has been identified. Over the next two years, we will be planting a brand new Junction Church campus into Nottingham (just up the road!). I’ve had a love of this city for many years. Having previously lived there, I always knew in my heart that God would one day draw me back to complete some unfinished business. I guess this is it.
The point is…our vibe is distinctive and clear – positive, loving, go-getting, cheeky and faith-filled. We care very deeply about growing healthy campuses so that people can truly flourish. We also carry a grace to see God’s salvation every time we gather. In this respect, our track record speaks for itself.
An estimated 95% of Nottingham doesn’t go to church. Just think about that for a moment. 95% of an entire city is convinced that church is not for them. So as a local church, we are going to play our part in reaching out to the vast unchurched majority. I love it that God is already doing some amazing things through other churches in Nottingham, some of the leaders of which I know. We will work with them to bring God’s hope to the city.
I would love you to pray for God’s favour on us as we pioneer new ground. I already sense very strongly that God’s hand is upon us in this adventure. It will begin with Life Groups meeting around the city during 2018 and then we will officially launch the Junction Church Nottingham in September 2019.
If you sense a calling to be part of our Junction Church Nottingham team, get in contact and we’ll get back to you. Email: email@example.com
